FREUD AT THE THRESHOLD OF THE 21ST CENTURY
AN INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE
13-16 December, 1999
JERUSALEM, ISRAEL
As we approach the twenty-first century, the deep impact of
Freud's psychoanalytic discoveries becomes even more evident
and prominent.
Following Freud's lead, psychoanalysis, beyond being a
therapeutic modality, has engaged in vital partnership and
vigorous discourse at the cultural, academic and creative
frontiers of this century. These intellectual and scientific
contributions, as well as controversies and divergent views
fostered by psychoanalytic thinking and experience are at
the focus of this International Conference. The aim is to
take a broad, yet searching look at the interfaces of
psychoanalysis with a variety of prominently related subject
areas. The central question to be examined will be the
extent to which psychoanalysis, having completed a century
of influential existence and at the threshold of its second
century, has fulfilled philosophy's age-old quest and
Freud's visionary claim, to provide the cornerstone for
"The Science of Man."
The conference will pursue and explore
these questions along several dimensions.
AMONG THE TOPICS TO BE DISCUSSED:
FREUD, PSYCHOANALYSIS AND MIND:
Psychoanalysis and Theories of Mind; The Philosophical
Standing of Psychoanalysis - Psychoanalytic Contributions to
the Study of Irrationality; Psychoanalysis and Memory
Studies; Memory, Trauma & Psychoanalysis; Understanding
the Subject; Psychoanalysis and Neuroscience.

Relativism; Freud and Gender Identity; Psychoanalysis and
Religious Extremism; Freud as a Cultural Hero.
